The Society can use both hair or tissue samples to confirm the parentage of any progeny.
Is it a requirement within the Society constitution that all male calves, and embryo transfer calves must be DNA tested to confirm their parentage before being released into the main herdbooks.
The Society have an extensive archive of animals on file with Weatherbys Scientific.
How to take a sample:
1. It is essential that hair samples are plucked, and NOT CUT, as it is the hair root follicles that contain the DNA and not the hair itself.
2. A minimum of 100 strong hairs should be sampled, preferably from the back of the neck and shoulder blade area – a few good tufts of plucked hair should be enough. Avoid sampling fine, woolly hair.
3. It is vital that the animal is completely dry and as clean as possible.
Profiles can also be generated from tissue samples and semen.
Samples should be placed in the packet provided, sealed and sent immediately, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Tissue and Semen should be sent in padded envelopes.
Samples typically take 4-6 weeks to go through the system on the initial test.
Through Cogent and ST Genetics, we are able to offer genomic testing which is designed to not only assist with confirming parentages, but supports breeders in many ways, from assisting with breeding decisions, to highlighing recessive genes and haplotypes.
Genomics are currently the only way of confirming Curley Calf Syndrome (Arthrogryposis Multiplex).
How to take a sample:
Firstly, you will need to order your testing kit through the Ayrshire office.
Your testing kit will arrive with all the equipment and instructions required.
Submit your samples back in the box provided, and let the office know the animals you have tested so we can submit the data.
Samples take a minimum of eight weeks to go through the initial testing process.
NB - Only animals over 75% Ayrshire are eligible for genomic testing. Animals under 75% will not generate a result.
