28th July 2018
Changue Ayrshires Go Out In Style
One of the largest crowds ever seen for an Ayrshire sale in the UK packed the ringside at Borderway, Carlisle on Friday 27th July to witness the final Changue Ayrshire dispersal, one of the iconic herds in the breed. The trade along with the weather was red hot with values topping at 4,200gns to average £1489 with 16 animals selling for or more than £2000.
The Changue Ayrshire herd has been under the management of the Stevenson family since 1850 and the first pedigree cattle were registered in 1906 making this fine herd one of the oldest in the UK. The influence Changue Ayrshire genetics has had in the breed has been massive both through their elite sires marketed through Cattle Services Ayr and through the prolific transmitting ability of their cow families. It was clear to see the importance of cow families and the value pedigree adds to dairy cattle with many young claves selling well above £2000.
The cow that graced the catalogue front cover topped the day’s trading at 4,200gns and was purchased by Messrs Bryson, Catrine a neighbour and friend of the Stevenson family. Changue Coffee Cream 30 had recently calved with her second and displayed all the style and class of a cow that will grace the best show rings in the UK. She was sired by Changue Stadium and completed six generations of cows to classify Excellent or Very Good.
Changue Carrie 105 sired by Changue Cadell tracing back to a special Excellent 92 third dam that produced over 60 ton on her lifetime. This super uddered cow was classified VG86 and was purchased for 2,900gns by Messrs Millar, Airdrie.
A popular cow that attracted a lot of attention was Changue Pamela 61 sired by Changue Pendulum, this powerful framed third calver had the best traits from the Ayrshire and Brown Swiss breeds and sold for 2,100gns to Messrs Bryson.
The big attraction in the Changue sale was the young heifers and breeders from all the home nations competed to win these special opportunities. The heifer that had it all sold for 3,200gns to Messrs McGarva, Annan. Changue Patsy 96 was sired by West Mossgiel Modern Reality, her first two dams were both Excellent followed by four more Very Good dams. This beautiful heifer is tipped to develop into a future legend of the Ayrshire breed.
The Maybelle cow family has produced many stars over the years and it Changue Maybelle 161 who sold for 3,100gns going to Messrs Sloan, Lockerbie. She was sired by Ravenhill Stormin Norman, her dam was an Excellent 93 Rosehill Slightly Magic daughter who placed 3rd a few weeks ago at the Great Yorkshire show for the Marleycote herd.
Also selling for 3,100gns was Changue Melanie 264 who was sired by East Church Patrolman and bred from eight generations of Excellent or Very Good dams. The third dam by Redbook topped the 2010 Changue sale at 3,500gns and won the Grand Champion at Dalrymple Show shortly after the sale. This ultra-stylish heifer was bought by Messrs Reid, Ballynahinch, N. Ireland.
