Judging Seminar at Ridley Court Farm, Sevenoaks, Kent
4th September 2023
A judging seminar was held at Ridley Court Farm, Kent, in the Southeast of England where 27 members and friends gathered to take the opportunity to attempt to qualify for the Society judging panel and to discuss the breeds characteristics and commercial viability. The day was hosted by Maggie Howie and family who provided two strong classes of quality cows and heifers for delegates to judge. Master judge for the day was Ayrshire breeder and NBDC type classifier Iwan Thomas.
The day started with Iwan providing a demonstration and explanation of the functionality of all traits of a dairy cow with guidance of judging etiquette in the ring. Members were given an opportunity for discussion and debate which was very much appreciated by all attending.
Two classes of cows and heifers were then put forward for judging and for those who wished to, to give reasons on their placings. After each class a good discussion on the results gave members the opportunity to ask questions and learn from each other’s observations. Maggie then informed us all of the cow families and the sires of the animals on display with daughters of Hunnington Famous and Whitecroft Dr Foster impressing all delegates.
A fabulous lunch was kindly provided and very much appreciated by everyone, and members were able to catch up and socialise before departing for home.
Huge thanks must go to everyone at Ridley Court Farm for their efforts and hospitality especially Maggie, David, and Beth. Also, to our master judge Iwan Thomas who conducted a first-class demonstration and explanation of the official results.
